আমি বললাম- “কি আর করা । আল্লাহ্ যা করেন ভালোর জন্যই করেন। সাজিদ আমার দিকে অদ্ভুদভাবে তাকালো। এরপর বললো- ‘তোদের এই এক দোষ, বুঝলি? দেখছিস পুওর এ্যাটেন্ডেন্সের জন্য এক বছর ড্রপ খাওয়াচ্ছে, তার মধ্যেও বলছিস, আল্লাহ্ যা করেন ভালোর জন্যই করেন। ভাই, এখানে কোন ভালোটা তুই পাইলি, বলতো?”
সাজিদ সম্পর্কে কিছু বলে নেওয়া দরকার। আমি আর সাজিদ রুমমেট। সে প্রাচ্যের অক্সফোর্ড ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে মাইক্রো বায়োলজিতে পড়ে। প্রথম জীবনে সে খুবই ধার্মিক ছিল। নামাজ-কালাম পড়তো। বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে এসে কিভাবে যেন এগনোস্টিক হয়ে পড়ে। আস্তে আস্তে স্রষ্টার উপর থেকে বিশ্বাস হারিয়ে এখন পুরোপুরি নাস্তিক হয়ে গেছে। ধর্মকে এখন সে স্রেফ আবর্জনা জ্ঞান করে। তার মতে পৃথিবীতে ধর্ম এনেছে মানুষ। আর ‘ইশ্বর’ ধারণাটাই স্বার্থান্বেষী কোন মহলের মস্তিষ্কপ্রসূত কল্পনামাত্র।
সাজিদের সাথে এই মূহুর্তে তর্কে জড়াবার কোন ইচ্ছে আমার নেই। কিন্তু তাকে একদম উপেক্ষা করেও যাওয়া যায় না। আমি বললাম- ‘আমার সাথে তো এর থেকেও খারাপ কিছু হতে পারতো, ঠিক না?’
– ‘আরে, খারাপ হওয়ার আর কিছু বাকি আছে না কি?’
– ‘হয়তো।’
– ‘যেমন?’
